Monthly Folklorist On The Road playlist on Spotify
Monthly Folklorist On The Road playlist is a collection of songs that I like and also it is for you to discover music that has traditional elements. Playlist includes Nordic folk music, Sámi music, Balto- Finnic music, Slavic music and other similar genres. The Finnish neo- traditional music scene is contemporary music following in the footsteps of cultural tradition; it is typically acoustic, with simple melodies and spare instrumentation.
Finland's musical ties are primarily to the Balto-Finnic peoples of Russia and Estonia. I enjoy to listen and explore the similarities of the music style and used instruments. Also hearing the beautiful differences that makes the music special for the culture and area. Finland shares many cultural similarities with both the Baltic nations and the Scandinavian nations. The Sámi of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia have their own unique culture, with ties to the neighboring cultures.
The Sámi are found in Norway, Sweden, Finland and the northwest corner of Russia. The only traditional Sámi instruments are drums and the flute, though modern bands use a variety of instrumentation. Yoiks, unrhymed works without definite structure, are the most characteristic kind of song.
The old Sámi singing style is said to be the oldest musical form in Europe. Yoiking has not always been appreciated as a form of music, however. At one time it was not even called music. The part of the tradition to have survived best in the face of western culture is the personal yoik. In the past, every single person had their own yoik. Most people have several, which develop as the individual grows and develops his or her personality. It is possible to yoik dead relatives, forgotten places and dramatic events, to make sure they do not disappear from the collective memory bank. When a conflict arises between two people, frustration can be expressed by inserted disparaging verses in the other person's yoik. In the same way, it is possible to express devotion by yoiking the person you love. (1)
